Measure a Replacement Insect Screen: Record the Frame System, Not Just the Opening
A replacement screen needs more information than the visible window opening. Frame dimensions, thickness, retaining hardware and the window system all affect fit. Measure an accessible removable screen on a stable surface and verify the supplier’s ordering instructions.

Identify the window and screen system
Look for a window maker, model label or installation record. Photograph the screen in place and its retainers before removal. Some screens fit into channels, while others use pins, springs or tabs. A nominal window size does not necessarily equal the finished screen-frame size.
Arrange safe access and keep children and pets away from an open window. An ordinary insect screen is not a fall barrier. Do not lean outside or stand on furniture to reach a measurement. If the screen has a specified security or other safety function, use the correct specialist replacement process instead of a generic insect-screen order.
Choose the supplier’s measuring method
Read whether the supplier wants finished frame dimensions, daylight opening dimensions or a specific deduction. These methods are not interchangeable. Ask before subtracting a guessed allowance. A screen made accurately to the wrong interpretation can still fail to fit.
If the existing removable frame is sound and representative, measuring it flat can be useful. Record overall width, height and frame thickness using the supplier's reference points. Include the units and a sketch. Where the original frame is missing or distorted, follow the window maker's opening-measurement instructions rather than reconstructing dimensions from memory.
Check squareness and hardware details
Measure more than one location where the instructions call for it. Compare diagonals if the method uses them to assess squareness. A bowed or damaged old frame may not provide a trustworthy template. Note the location and type of each retainer, handle and crossbar, including which side faces indoors.
Photograph a ruler beside relevant hardware without exposing yourself to unsafe access. Keep images clear and label orientation. A replacement frame that matches height and width but lacks the correct spring or pin arrangement may not retain properly. Hardware details belong in the order, not in an improvised adjustment after delivery.
Review a sample order record
Imagine an existing screen whose supplier requests finished outside frame dimensions. Your record includes width, height, frame thickness, retainer type, interior-facing side and a photograph of the window label. You repeat the measurements independently and compare them before placing the order.
If the two readings differ, inspect the reference points rather than averaging without explanation. A bent corner or a tape held diagonally may be responsible. Send the supplier the measurement method and ask for confirmation where uncertain. The goal is a reproducible specification, not a long string of numbers with no description.
Verify the replacement without forcing it
When the screen arrives, compare the finished component with the order before fitting. Use the intended mounting method and confirm every retainer engages. Check that the window still opens, closes and locks normally. Do not bend the frame or trim hardware to make a near match fit unless the manufacturer expressly provides that adjustment.
Keep the order specification and installed photographs for later replacements. If the fit is insecure, remove the screen safely and contact the supplier. Maintain protection at the open window throughout the process. Accurate measurement supports a good insect barrier, while window safety remains a separate requirement.
Before ordering, read the supplier’s tolerance and return conditions for custom sizes. Confirm unclear dimensions in writing, especially when the old frame is missing or the window opening is visibly out of square.

Questions that come up
Should I subtract a standard allowance?
Use only the supplier’s specified method. Some orders require finished frame size and others use opening size with a stated deduction. A guessed universal allowance can produce an insecure or unusable fit.
Can I copy a bent old frame?
A distorted frame can give misleading dimensions. Check the window maker’s or supplier’s method and assess squareness. Describe the damage instead of silently treating it as the intended shape.
Does a correct-size insect screen provide fall protection?
No. Ordinary mesh screens do not provide a child or pet fall barrier. Appropriate window-safety measures must be planned independently of insect-screen dimensions.
